President’s Annual Newsletter November 2017
Letter From the President, Erin Bloom Slattery
As the newly elected President of Wellesley-in-Philadelphia, I am delighted to write to you about the state of our club and introduce our new board. First, I’d like to send our special thanks to our out-going board members, including Jennifer Minton, Michele Lee, Miranda Casiano, and particularly our long-time President Alicia Templeton, for their time and dedication to our club. Our club exists because of the efforts of our generous volunteer board. At this year’s annual meeting we elected four new board members and welcomed back five returning board members.
We are looking for additional alums to serve as regional at-large board members so we can fully represent our large geographic constituency. Volunteers serve as club leaders who help organize events and outreach programs, participate in mentoring and admission opportunities, and serve their community. We are particularly interested in volunteers from Delaware, South Jersey, Bucks County, or the Main Line. We would love for you to consider joining us on the board.
For more information, please contact Erin Slattery at WIP-President@alum.wellesley.edu.
The Wellesley Alumnae Association advises that the mission of Wellesley-in-Philadelphia is:
- To nurture alumnae friendships—Wellesley women enjoy one another's company and can be a rich source of support for one another.
- To promote continuing education and intellectual stimulation through Wellesley's commitment to lifelong learning.
- To assist the Office of Admission by identifying qualified high school students and cultivating their interest in Wellesley.
- To participate in a dynamic network of women who bring a wealth of career experience and knowledge to alumnae facing decision points in their professional lives.
- To enhance Wellesley's image through community involvement. To demonstrate in a public way the value of a Wellesley education and to fulfill our motto of service to others.
Treasury & Membership Update
Sophia Bunyaraksh, our loyal Treasurer and Membership Chair, reports that the Club’s finances are in good shape due to the support of our club members whose dues fund our programming efforts. We had 99 dues paying members in Fiscal Year 2017 which ended in June. We are setting a goal of 110 dues paying members for FY2018! We are grateful to Club members whose dues support our programs. Thanks to those who have already paid this year’s dues. If you haven’t yet paid, please click HERE to pay using our secure server. Note: If you pay your dues online, you’ll receive a reminder 60 days before your next year’s dues are due!
We greatly value all of our supporters and hope you will consider joining the club or renewing your membership!

Since 1982, Wellesley has used the Book Award program to honor young women in their junior year of high school who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership in their community. The awards are sponsored by W-I-P and provide an opportunity to both recognize local students and to introduce them to Wellesley College. Last year, we presented 28 copies of the Norton Book of Women's Lives, featuring beautiful blue linen slipcovers with the Wellesley seal embossed in gold on the cover, to outstanding young women at 22 local high schools. The Book Award is a critical tool for spreading the word about Wellesley to parents, teachers, students, and guidance counselors. Please consider sponsoring a Book Award at just $30.
Schools participating in the book award program include: Abington Sr. High School, Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, Agnes Irwin School, Central Bucks High School East, Central High School, Episcopal Academy, Interboro High School, J.R. Masterman School, Jenkintown High School, Mastery Charter School – Thomas Campus, Methacton High School, Moorestown Friends School, Moorestown High School, North Penn High School, Olney Charter High School, Penncrest High School, Pennsbury High School, Philadelphia High School for Girls, Shipley School, Tatnall School and Upper Darby High School.
Some of these schools have participated in this program for many years. Please contact Kerry Wagner Woodward at WIP-BookAward@alum.wellesley.edu if you have questions about the program or have a contact at a local high school that you wish to see included in this program..
Taylor Pasteur is our new Young Alumnae Rep. She organizes events aimed at recent grads and maintains our Young Alumnae Facebook. We often co-sponsor and participate in activities with the Philadelphia Seven Sisters Club. Please check out the W-I-P Young Alum Facebook group for the latest information. Contact Taylor at WIP-YoungAlumnae@alum.wellesley.edu with your ideas and suggestions.
